Frequently Asked Question About Dehydration

How does your products work?

Natuvital offer a range of oral rehydration products designed to help rehydrate and manage mild dehydration by replacing fluids and electrolytes in the body. Our formulas contain essential electrolytes and glucose, which enhance the absorption of sodium across the intestinal membrane.

What conditions can your products be used for?

Natuvital products contains a balanced mix of glucose and minerals that promotes water absorption and is indicated for dehydration. It helps to replace fluids and electrolytes lost due to dehydrating conditions such as:

  • Diarrhoea
  • Vomiting
  • Fever
  • Cold or flu
  • During sport
  • Consumption of alcohol

What are the dosage recommendations for you products?

How much needed per day should be determined by taking into account the weight of the patient as well as the severity of the condition. Please see the table below for further information. Note: Children dehydrate much quicker than adults and as such parents need to be vigilant and seek medical attention quickly if symptoms persist. Seek medical advice if diarrhoea persists for more than:

  • 6 hours in infants under 6 months of age
  • 12 hours in children aged 6 months ‐ 3 years
  • 24 hours in children aged 3‐6 years
  • 48 hours in adults and children over 6 years of age

Volume of fluid required over the first 6 hours and then every 6 hours thereafter

Weight (kg) In the first 6 hours (mL) Every 6 hours thereafter (mL)
Child 5kg‐9 200‐400 150‐210
10‐14 400‐800 300‐420
15‐19 800‐1000 450‐630
20‐29 900‐1500 600‐840
30kg ‐ Adults 1000‐2000 900‐1260

Can I use sport drinks, flat lemonade or juice to help rehydrate?

Sports drinks are considered unsuitable for dehydration caused by vomiting and/or diarrhoea. This is because although sports drinks replenish electrolytes, they replace those lost through sweating, not through diarrhoea or vomiting. Also, sport drinks contain much more sugar than sodium which pulls more fluid into your intestines, worsening your dehydration. It’s a similar story for lemonade or other soft drinks. They have a high sugar content which attracts fluid into the gut, causing more diarrhoea. Juices containing a high amount of sugar also fall into this category so should be avoided during diarrhoea.

Are Natuvital products safe during pregnancy and lactation?

There is no contraindication for the use of Natuvital products in pregnancy and lactation. However, pregnant and lactating women suffering from acute diarrhoeal conditions such as gastroenteritis should consult their healthcare practitioner.

Please be aware that ReSport contains caffeine (60 mg per dose).

What will happen if Natuvital products are mixed with fluids other than water?

Adding Natuvital Electrolyte Rehydration Formulas to liquids other than water (such as milk, soft drinks, lemonade or cordials) may alter the careful balance of glucose and electrolytes necessary for quick and effective rehydration. Only mix with water.
